Inspired by a memorable stay at Black Barn Lodge in Hawke’s Bay, this Greytown home was envisioned as a place to slow down, unwind, and gather with family and friends.
Architecturally designed by Alan Minty, the home provided a strong and considered foundation for a relaxed lodge-style interior.
Designed for a retired lifestyle, the brief was to create a warm and inviting home—one that would feel both relaxed and refined, while welcoming children and grandchildren for years to come.
Working from concept through to procurement and styling, we curated a cohesive interior that balances comfort with understated elegance. Existing accessories and the client’s art collection were thoughtfully integrated, adding familiarity and personal depth to the space.
At the heart of the home, the ‘U’-shaped layout opens to a beautifully designed outdoor living area, seamlessly connecting the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. This outdoor zone was conceived as an extension of the interior—enhancing everyday living and strengthening the connection to the surrounding landscape.
To ensure comfort in the Wairarapa climate, bespoke outdoor furniture was commissioned using durable, heavy-weight materials, designed to withstand windy conditions while maintaining a refined aesthetic. Louvre shutters were incorporated to filter the strong New Zealand sunlight, creating a sheltered and inviting environment throughout the day.
A carefully curated monochrome palette was enriched through texture and detail, including a distinctive African mask positioned above the outdoor fireplace, along with a collection of objets d’art gathered during the clients’ travels—adding character and a subtle sense of global influence throughout the home.
The result is a home that feels warm, welcoming, and effortlessly liveable—a place designed for relaxation, connection, and creating lasting memories.
